Early Interventionists

When parents have concerns about their very young children, they first contact early interventionists – occupational and physical therapists, speech pathologists, ABA therapists, and early childhood special educators.

These clinicians and educators are in a unique position to help parents understand their child’s strengths and limitations, often in the intimate setting of the family’s home. Being with parents as they come to see their child and her needs more clearly requires sensitivity, tact, and helping families to be realistically optimistic. Yet, therapists of all backgrounds rarely have the opportunity to discuss how to effectively interact with parents and with one another.

“I’m finding that a lot of my work involves supporting parents with their feelings, but I’m not a psychotherapist. How do I do this while staying within my role?”

“I respect the members of this child’s service team, but we have different ideas. How do share my observations in a way others will hear?”

“I’m confident working with infants and toddlers, but interacting with their parents requires a closeness I hadn’t expected. How can I become more comfortable with this?”

“I’m a skilled ABA therapist. I’d like to expand my knowledge and learn more about early developmental and attachment issues, and how they influence behaviors.”

I can help with questions like these.

After learning about your experience, work setting, and clinical goals, I put together a consultation plan grounded in your concerns and objectives. As an experienced early childhood mental health consultant, I’ll have your role and its demands in mind. The most meaningful learning happens when you share specific examples of your interactions with children and families.

D.I.R. / Floortime Consultation and Level 1 Professional Certification Course

I also offer consultation to early interventionists wanting to deepen their understanding of the Developmental, Individual-Difference, Relationship-Based, (D.I.R.) model and its Floortime technique.

And for professionals of all disciplines pursuing D.I.R. certification, I teach a year-long Level 1 course through the Profectum foundation.
